Charles McCarthy was a 20 yr old Miller native of Co Cork, 5ft 6in tall, who was transported for Life to NSW for the crime of abducting a young woman together with two other men, the Sullivans. He was tried at County Cork at the Summer Assizes in August 1822:
” Charles McCarthy, Patrick Sulilivan and John Sullivan abducted Mary Farrell, daughter of Timothy Farrell on the night of 28 March with intent that Daniel McCarthy should marry or defile her, and of appearing in arms to accomplish that purpose.” PER: Finn’s Leinster Journal, 31 August 1822 p2

Monday morning a respite arrived at Cork, for Charles McCarthy, Patrick Sullivan, and John Sullivan, under sentence for execution, Saturday the 7 September, for the abduction of Mary Farrell.
