Details of James (McGowan)s family are: Some amendments added Aug 2025. McGOWAN James (McGowan) arrived in Australia as a convict in 1797 on BRITANNIA. He was Free by Servitude by 1812. He had a relationship with Isabella (Clarkson her third relationship (3of4).) James (McGowan) does not have an entry on this Website as yet-added by me Isabella (Clarkson) was born about 1788. She was tried for stealing linen probably at Old Bailey, sentenced to 7years, held at Middlesex gaol delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 16 11 1808 after a voyage of 8months on SPEKE. He was sent to Norfolk Island in 1792, but recorded (as Richard (Lyne) arriving on 29 1 1790. He had a first relationship with Mary (Davis) from 1791. He left Norfolk Island with his family on 9 3 1793 on KITTY to Port Jackson NSW. He enlisted in NSW Corps on 13 4 1793 as a private. In 1795 he was granted 25acres at Portland Head. In 1798 he was detached to (Grose)s company. In 1804 he was detached to (Paterson)s company at Port Dalrymple Tasmania, taking his family on BUFFALO. He was Free by Servitude by 1807. In 1808 he was detached to (Cumming)s company then 7company until 24 4 1810 when he was detached to Veterans company, presumably in Sydney; he remained with Veterans company at least until 1817. He was granted 100acres in 1810 which became Quarmby Estate. In 1825 he was supplying meat to the Government in Launceston. He was sent to Norfolk Island arriving in 1801 & returned to Port Jackson leaving on 22 2 1805 on INVESTIGATOR. He was sent to Port Dalrymple Tasmania & was apppointed storekeeper/clerk in 1807. He purchased land & was granted 50acres at Quamby Plains near Westbury, which he named 'Bele Vue' & later became 'Quamby'. He was Free by Servitude by 1811. He was recorded on 18 3 1816 as Superintendent. For his good service, including as Commissariat clerk, he was Pardoned in December 1817. In 1822 he was assistant secretary of British & Foreign Bible Society at Port Dalrymple. In 1827 he had amassed by purchases his holdings to 12,000acres. In 1828 he was one of founders of Cornwall Bank & in 1832 one of founders of Tamar Steam Navigation Company. From 1830 he lived at his farm 'Elphin' near Launceston.
