Qld State Archives has numerous references regarding his leases/land holdings. NSW State Archives holds one land record for 1850 (pre-separation for land in Brisbane) and convict records. While buried in Ipswich Cemetery according to his death certificate and newspaper reports, there is no record of him there (anecdotally told lost in the floods). There is a family history publication "The Brothers McGrath" which may possibly be sourced from the Ipswich FHS. There is also reference to Darby in Rosamund Siemons book "The Mayne Inheritance".




Darby real name Michael became large landowner at Willowbank near Ipswich. His land is now part of Amberley air base. Brother of John McGrath also an Irish convict, cattle stealing 1836, arrived Sydney on "Waverley" 1839. John married Mary Pacey, daughter of Patrick Pacey, and was first landholder in Moggill area of Brisbane. Patrick Pacey also a convict, perjury, in 1837 also arrived on "Waverley" 1839.




Darby McGrath was 30 years old on arrival in NSW. He was transported for "Assault on an excise officer" and his occupation was a Farmer/Illicit whiskey distiller". Darby was married with 1 male and 1 female child. 1838: TOL Berrima. Darby's brother John McGrath was transported on the Waverley 1837 and sent to Brisbane. In the 1840's Darby moved up to the West of Brisbane and had land holdings around Amberley. His property was named "Willowbank". 1851: Married Mary Ann Connolly, and had 9 children. Darby was a keen horse breeder and also a judge for the Ipswich Agricultural Society. 1892: Darby died at Ipswich and is buried with Mary Ann who died in 1903 at the Ipswich Cemetery.
