Description of content of petition " 1 individual petition (prisoner with testimony from Mary Draper, his second wife) on behalf of John Machenery alias John Lillis convicted at the Old Bailey on 7 September 1832 for bigamy. Grounds for clemency: first wife was 'an abandoned woman' who brought shame and ridicule upon him, left her to come to London where worked hard, married Mary Draper but unaware of criminal consequences, paid off debts for Mary Draper, she is willing to have him back, neither wife injured or ill-treated, no children involved, since imprisoned mother has died leaving 2 orphans dependent on him for support. Initial sentence: 7 years' transportation. Gaoler's report: here before. Annotated: nil."
