Meakins had attempted next day to bring a dispatch to Hobart town, but on arriving at a large river (we believe the Huon) which they were swimming across with their clothes tied in bundles behind their heads, they were surprised by some blacks who attacked them by throwing their spears at them and obliged them to retreat leaving their garments behind.
