Convict Notes

George Merryman, later spelt Merriman, had a convict sister, Esther, married another convict, Mary Smith in 1813 and they had 3 children. /His youngest, also George, became a farmer. His son, again George, owned a large sheep farm at Murrumbateman, NSW which, upon his death, was /split among his 3 sons. One son, Walter, named his property Merryville and was a sheep breeder who developed the Merino to produce a higher yield of better quality. His contribution to the wool industry was such that it was recognised with a knighthood in 1954 so he became Sir Walter Merriman. (See Wikipedia page) George and Mary's 2nd son, James, was taken in by a guardian upon George's death and given an education. He started as a cooper then spent 4 years on whaling ships. On returning to Sydney, he became the publican of The Whalers Arms in Millers Point, Sydney. He bought 2 more hotels, became a shipping agent and owned several ships trading overseas and bought several more properties. He was said to own most of Millers Point. He was also a politician and was the member for West Sydney in the State Parliament for 3 years. He was an alderman on Sydney City Council for 15 years until his death in 1883 and, for 3 years, was Mayor of Sydney. There is also a Merriman Street in Millers Point named after him.
