Maria MIDDLETON was convicted at Hereford on 13 Mar 1838 for stealing money from a person. Convicted before. 10yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) per the ‘Nautilus’ arriving 1 Sept 1838.
Ship Surgeon’s report: “well behaved and clean”.
Single woman; aged 31 yrs; dairy maid; 5’.
Native place: Shropshire, England.
Assignments of service work in the Colony of VDL.
6 Apr 1840: Charged with receiving stolen goods. Fully committed for trial in the Hobart Supreme Court. Guilty. Further 14yrs added to sentence. Sent to the Female House of Correction, Hobart for 2 yrs and her conduct to be reported.
31 Aug 1842: Misconduct. 3mths at the Wash Tubs, House of Correction.
4 Nov 1845: Ticket of Leave granted.
30 Mar 1848: Drunk & disturbing the peace. Fined.
1849: Conditional Pardon (not to return to United Kingdom).
19 June 1854: Certificate of Freedom.
