Joseph Milnthorpe was transported on the Runnymede , departing 11th Jun 1856 and arriving 7th Sep 1856 with 247 passengers.
The original 'Runnymede' was built in London 1825, 389 tons. Sailing of this ship to Australia with convict transportees, including boy convicts 1839/1840 to Van Diemen's Land. (It appears this ship made other sailings to Australia, as a barque with immigrant passengers.) This Runnymede was wrecked near the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal in 1844. n.b. There is another 'Runnymede' ship. Built in Sunderland in 1854, the 720 ton ship Runnymede II - embarked 248 male convicts at Plymouth on 15 June 1856, landing all in Western Australia on 7 September, after a passage of 84 days - the sailing also had soldier families for settlement there. A 284 ton barque Runneymede of Hobart was wrecked at Frenchman's Bay, on 24 December 1878.

It was employed as a convict transport for Western Australia and left Plymouth, England on June 15, 1856 bound for the Swan River Colony. She carried the seventeenth of 37 shipments of male convicts destined for Western Australia. The voyage took 84 days and the Runnymede arrived in Fremantle on September 7, 1856 with 89 passengers and 248 convicts [Erickson]. William Burrows and Henry Edmonds were the captain and surgeon respectively. There were no deaths recorded on the convict shipping and description lists and 248 convict numbers were assigned for the voyage ranging from (3983 to 4230). Of the 89 passengers mentioned above, all 89 were pensioner guards and their families, the number being made up of 30 pensioner guards, 19 wives, 18 sons and 22 daughters. The comments field gives alternative names attributed to the various convicts, many of which are not only spelling variations, but alternative names used in later life or in subsequent re-convictions. The age quoted seems to refer to the age of the convict when he was taken to trial.
