Convict Notes

State Library of Queensland on 19th June 2012

Michael Moncaster was 27 years old when transported for; wounding a Policeman wo tried to arrest him for violent assault. He was born in Louth. Michael was married to Elizabeth, who described herself as a widow after 1839. He had a son called William born in 1839 and other children (how many not known). 1839: TOL Scone 10/6/1850: CP Trove: 28th July, 1859 - District News - Scone. French v Moncaster - This was a charge of assult, alleged to have been committed by Michael Moncaster upon Thomas French. French stated that on Sunday, the 17th instant, defendant came to his house about half-past one o'clock in the afternoon, bringing with him a bottle of rum, and demanding addmittance, upon the refusal of which he threw the bottle away, and then pulled the prosecutor off a stool upon which he was sitting, and knocked hin down, at the same time kicking and beating him with his fists while on the ground. French, who is an old man, bore undeniable marks on his face and body of severe treatment. Moncaster denied having been in the house at all, or assaulting French in the manner described. The bench held that there had been assaults on both sides, but from the circumstances of French being and old man and Moncaster very much his junior, more discretion should have been exercised by Moncaster, and therefore ordered him to pay 30s., and costs, or 7 days imprisonment. Michael died in 1881 at scone. No marriage or children records found.
