Gilbert Muir arrived as a married convict on the Burrell as he was refused permission to marry. However in 1844 on the Australian Agricultural Estate at Stroud he married my great great grandmother Catherine Donovan, later Russell. Gilbert's death remains a mystery to researchers, even though it is believed to be in the Tenterfield area. In 1856 Catherine Moore (read Muir) married James Russell. The priest found it necessary to comment on the marriage certificate that "the bride had five boys and two girls". Descendants are left busy researching James, John, Gilbert, Joseph, Isabella (aka Elizabeth) and Charles. From Scottish records it seems Gilbert was acquainted with crime.
