Convict Notes




Although no evidence has been found to back up the claims that this convict actually existed, it has been claimed that she was a real person with real descendants and was the inspiration for the character Mary Mulvane (played by Mary Larkin) in the Australian miniseries “Against the Wind”. Mary Mulvane is thought to have been born in either County Wicklow or County Cork Ireland in 1778. The daughter of a rebel teacher, she was convicted of stealing her family’s cow (which provided income and food) which was unjustly seized by the British in order to cover missed taxes in 1796 and sentenced to seven years transportation.
