After receiving his ticket-of-leave about 1832, Charles became a successful boatman, ferrying farm produce and livestock to Hobart from his base on the Derwent at Forbes's Wharf, Herdsman's Cove. Around 1837, he met Anne Cavanagh, a young woman born in the colony, and soon haad two daughters: Harriett (1837) and Margaret (1839). On 21 May 1840, Charles and Anne were married at St David's, Hobart. Two more children followed: John (1840) and Mary Ann (1842). However, very shortly after the birth of the last child, Charles died. He was only 35. The death certificate shows the cause as 'mania'.
