The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

It is highly likely that John was the father of Sophia Maria Robson Smith as he had requested permission to marry her mother and it had been granted, before they could marry however John's wife Rebecca and their sons arrived from England

John Parker was born about 1795. His family lived in Wilby, Norfolk before his conviction. He was married to Rebecca Huggins and had three sons when he was transported. He finally settled in Castlereagh where he purchased land and became a successful farmer. He and Rebecca had two more sons in Australia. John died in 1874. He and Rebecca are buried in the Cemetery at Castlereagh along with four of their sons. Many of his descendants still live in the Penrith area.
