"William Patrick was a native of Herefordshire, England and was born around 1795 . On August 4, 1818 he was tried at Hereford Assizes and found guilty of the crime of sheep stealing. Originally sentenced to be executed the sentence was changed to transportation for life to the Colony of NSW. William arrived in Australia on September 1, 1819 on board the convict ship, Canada. Within two years of his arrival William married Sarah Sunderland, daughter of John and Mary Sunderland. The Sunderland family had arrived in Australia, earlier in 1808. William and Sarah were married at St John’s Parramatta on July 5, 1821 and they went on to have 8 children. The children were mainly born in the Parramatta area. William received his Ticket of Leave for the Parramatta area on November 19, 1838 William was recommended for his Conditional Pardon on January 31, 1839 William died at his daughter’s house in Yass, NSW in 1864, aged 69years."

Family connections for William (Patrick) are: PATRICK William (Patrick) was born about 1795/1800 in Herefordshire. He was tried for sheep stealing at Hereford Assizes on 4 4 1818, sentenced to death commuted to Life & arrived in NSW as a convict on 1 9 1819 after a voyage of 4months on CANADA. He was Free by Servitude when he married Sarah (Sunderland age16) on 5 7 1821 at St Johns CofE Parramatta. He was recorded at Parramatta in 1826 as a farmer & in 1828 & 1832 as a labourer. He was issued his Ticket of Leave for Parramatta on 19 11 1838. His Conditional Pardon was recommended on 31 1 1839. He died in 1864 age69 at his daughter’s house in Yass. William and Sarah had 7 children between 1822 and 1834. I am unable to locate the family in the 1828 New South Wales Census.

In the colony, William married Sarah Sunderland. William Patrick P[risoner] Canada the 2nd age 26 of the parish of Parramatta and Sarah Sunderland of ditto were married in this church by banns this fifth day of July 1821 by me Samuel Marsden. William and Sarah both made their X marks in the register in the presence of John Sunderland and Ann Hamlon who both signed the register.
