Birth About 1821 • Markfield, Leicestershire, England: Baptism 5 March 1821 at Markfield: Stephen son of Joseph & Jane Pewtril, abode Markfield, labourer. Marriage 02 Dec 1839 • Hugglescote, Leicestershire, England: in the Chapel of Hugglescote, Stephen Powdril (age 19, labourer, father Joseph, labourer) and Ann Jays (age 23, father Joseph, Labourer). Stephen and Ann had children: Jane Ann Pewtrell 1839– Emma Pewtrell 1841–1910 Conviction at Leicestershire, 11 Mar 1840: Stephen Powdrill age 19 , larceny by servant, sentenced to 2 months imprisonment. Conviction at Leicestershire Assizes 22 March 1844, for burglary, sentenced to 10 years transportation. On 30 March 1844 - The newspaper Leicestershire Mercury gave a detailed report of the trial: On 18 April 1844 Elizabeth Kelham, servant of Mr Draycott at Kirby Muxloe locked up for the night and when she came down the following morning,"she found the doors unfastened, and missed from the cupboard some plumcake, butter and bread, some stockings of her own, and a shoe-horn belonging to her master." Two witnesses saw Stephen in the area. "William Allard, police-officer, stationed at Desford, stated that he searched the house of the prisoner at Hugglescote, on the 26th of April, and found the shoe-horn". Departure 6 July 1844 'Pewterill', Stephen, transportation in the Agincourt, 224 male convicts, to Norfolk Island and Van Diemans Land. 9 November 1844 arrived Norfolk Island, and on 30 December 1846 was transferred to Tasmania on the Lady Franklin. Description from convict records: 5ft 6in, complexion fair, hair brown, no whiskers, eyes light grey, high forehead, long head, nose, chin, small scar near right eye, married with 2 children, trade groom, native place Markfield. Ticket of Leave granted January 1850.
