Jane POPPLETON was convicted at Liverpool, Lancaster, England on 7 July 1834 for larceny - stealing clothes. Previous offence for stealing money. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'New Grove' arriving 27 March 1835. Ship Surgeon's Report: "good". Married woman. Husband Joshua, a fustian cutter (heavy cloth) at Manchester. Aged 30 yrs; a farm servant; 5'3 1/2" height; dark complexion; dk brown hair; grey eyes. Native place of birth: Dublin, Ireland. (ref. Convict Indent) VDL: Assigned to work services in the Colony. Several records of misconduct and punishment, including being sent to the Female Factory to work at the wash tubs (considered very hard work). 6 Jan 1843: Ticket of Leave approved. 24 July 1843: Birth of her male child - name not recorded on registration, nor name of father. Mother - Jane Poppleton, female convict. Hobart district, ref. 33/1/1 no.1701. 1844: Representing herself to be free & ill-using her infant child. 1844: Free Certificate issued. 1865: Hobart - stealing a Mantle. 3 mths imprisonment with hard labour. 1867: Kingston - drunk & disorderly. 1 mth hard labour. 4 Oct 1880: DEATH - Jane POPPLETON aged 86 yrs; female; servant; cause - senility. New Town Pauper Establishment.
