Convict Notes
John Price was aged 26 when he was convicted of stealing a kettle from an ironmonger's and then maliciously cutting with intent to maim an apprentice at the ironmonger's shop. He had a wife and one child. He was born at Ross (Herefordshire) per his VDL Conduct record. He must have continued to live around Ross because this was the location of the premises he robbed. The records for the Justitia Hulk made this comment on him: "Comm’d before, very bad character, bad connections" Bad connections refer to his family and friends/associates. He was transported for FIFTEEN years on "Coromandel' to Van Diemen's Land arriving 26 Oct 1838. He was: * tried on 24 March 1838, * taken from Hereford gaol and arrived on the Justitia Hulk at Woolwich on 13 April * and on 15 June 1838 - removed from the hulk to the ship for VDL. TRIAL REPORT IN NEWSPAPER: Hereford Journal, Herefordshire, England Wednesday 28 March 1838, page 2 " HEREFORD ASSIZES "Monday March 26th "Before Mr Justice Alderson in the Nisi Prius court John Price was indicted for having stolen a copper tea-kettle, the property of Mr Wm Davies, ironmonger, of Ross. "Wm Edwards, apprentice to the prosecutor, stated that in January last he was in the shop when the prisoner came in with a basket of ashes upon his head, and with which he went to the ash pit. Witness on looking up discovered copper tea-kettle partly concealed at the top of the basket, which he charged him with having stolen, and detained him until his master came in. "The prosecutor stated that when he came in to the shop, he saw the prisoner, who refused to be searched, and tried to make his escape, upon which witness seized him – a scuffle ensued and the prisoner drew a knife from his pocket and made a thrust at Mr Davies’ head, by which his hat was cut through and a slight wound inflicted upon his forehead. "The prisoner was subsequently secured, and given into custody. Verdict – Guilty. It was clearly proved that the violence occurred after the felonious act and the prisoner was sentenced to be transported for fifteen years."
