IRISH CONVICTION, LENT SESSIONS 1819: Freemans Journal Monday, March 22, 1819; Page: 4 "WATERFORD ASSIZES: He following trials took place in the City Court: … Thomas PURCELL for stealing wearing apparel from the fever hospital, guilty, to be transported for seven years." 1828 Census: Thomas Purcell, Age: 30, Catholic, 7 years, Free by Servitude; Blacksmith; lives at T Plank; Residence: Kent St Household Return district: Sydney (Note no ship listed) COLONIAL SENTENCE 26 May 1829 at Criminal Court Sydney: 3 years to an iron gang 26 May 1829 by Criminal Court Sydney for felony. Thomas Purcell RAN from iron gang, 16 Aug 1829, but was apprehended at Sutton Forest over a year later on 4 Oct 1830, brought before the [?] Bench which ordered him 50 lashes & six months in the heavy chain gang & if his conduct be good during that time to serve the rest of his sentence in an ordinary iron gang and to serve the whole of the time he has been absent NSW Sentence - Certificate issued: Ticket of Leave number 1088 Certificate of Freedom number 4815;

On return of fines and punishments in the Police Office (Reel 6023; 4/6671 p.84) 24/7/1823: Thomas was 28, 5’10” tall, sandy hair, hazel eyes, pockpitted, fair ruddy complexion – Absconded from Mr Cullen’s clearing party. 1829: Colonial sentence – for the larceny of goods of Hector O’Neil – to be worked in irons for 3 years. 2/2/1826: COF 10/4/1828: COF renewed.
