Convict Notes

Walsh and John Regan, two boys, were indicted for assaulting Patrick Hennery, and taking from his person one half crown. one shilling, and four pieces copper coin, the 19th of September, 1830. at Waterford. Patrick Hennery, a miserable looking young man, dressed in very tattered garments, and in a delicate state of health, was sworn and examined Mr. Scott, K.C. He stated that he lived near the Manor. On the 19th of last September, about half-past 11 o'clock night, he left his house for the purpose of buying some tobacco on his return from Patrick street, where purchased the tobacco, he met Walsh and Regan, the prisoners, in John street, within ten yards of his own house, Regan asked him for the price of half pint of whiskey, and on his refusing to give it, they both asked him for the price of three “Billies” (half glasses of whiskey). This he also refused to give, and Regan then struck him in the eye. The watchman, whose walk it the Manor and John street, was present during the time. Walsh then struck him with brickbat in the back of the head, and Regan with a stone. Regan, when he, Hennery was knocked down, wanted to try his pockets for money, but he resisted. Regan took from his pocket knife and swore G— that he would tip him open if he did not give the money. Walsh then cut at his clothes, and cut away his pocket in which was half-crown and halfpence, Walsh then struck him and knocked him on his knees, and Regan knocked him down. They then went away taking with them his pocket, part of his dress, and the money. When they were going away he called to Walsh and desired him to remember that it was he that cut off his pocket. When his clothes were cut, slight incision, but nut dangerous, was made by the knife on his person. He has not recovered his health since, and his appearance bore strong evidence to the truth of the assertion. ... ... Waterford Mail, 27 July 1831. Waterford summer assizes.
