JOHN ROACH, Theft > pocketpicking, 5th April 1832.
1056. JOHN ROACH was indicted for stealing, on the 25th of March , 1 watch, value 30s., and 1 watch-chain, value 1s., the goods of Edward Grubb , from his person .

EDWARD GRUBB. I am a labourer ; I was walking with my wife in Lower Berner-street, Commercial-road , between eight and nine o’clock, in the evening of the 25th of March - just as I was turning a corner the prisoner came across the way, and snatched my watch; he ran off- I pursued, and did not lose sight of him till he was taken with it.

JOHN JEFFORD . I am an officer. I saw the prisoner running - he met me, and I stopped him; I tripped my foot against a scraper, and as I arose I saw him throw something from his hand; the prosecutor came up, and said he had taken his watch.

GEORGE ROBINS . I took up the watch.(Property produced and sworn to.)

Prisoner’s Defence. I was playing, and heard the cry of Stop thief! I ran, as other boys did - the officer stopped me, and the prosecutor said he had lost his watch, but he did not believe it was me, as there was a corner turned.

GUILTY . Aged 20. - Transported for Fourteen Years .
