Convict Notes

Police Incidents. MONDAY, JULY 2. Bernard Rochford, holdings ticket-of leave for the district of Yass, and lately residing in York-street, was charged with fraud under the following circumstances. It appeared that some years ago, a piece of land, in the neighbourhood of New Town, consisting of one hundred and twenty acres was devised to him by a person named Devine, to whom he was assigned servant. Rochford subsequently disposed of the land to a gentleman named Coulson, for the sum of fifteen hundred pounds. He afterwards contracted debt to Mr. Pendray, tailor, George-street, to the amount of nearly two hundred pounds, and proposed the assignment of twenty acres of this land to liquidate the amount. After the land had been transferred to Pendray, he again sold it to a person named Barrett. The Bench without going into the question of the fraud, sentenced Rochford's ticket to be cancelled for being out of his district, and ordered him to be returned to the service of Government. Sydney Gazette, 5 July 1838.
