Initial sentence: Seven years transportation. Annotated: 'Nil'. Considered by Lord Sidmouth 21 November 1821. Petitioner(s): The prisoner. See record for details. -------------------------------------------------- FRIDAY, OCT. 19.—James Rowley, for assaulting Thomas Saunders, a Constable, was ordered to do penance in the Chain-gang for 14 days. The Tasmanian, 25 Oct 1827. Record of Police. William Lindsay, W. Jones, James Rowley and Wm. Bray were committed for stealing wheat out of a vessel in the Harbour. Hobart Town Courier, 16 Aug 1828. James Rowley, William Lindsay, and William Jones, were convicted of stealing nine bushels of wheat, value 3l. 12s. the property of John Kerr. Hobart Town Courier, 2 May 1829. After them the following were led into Court, and received sentence of 7 years' transportation, viz :- … James Rowley, William Lindsey, ... for various larcenies. Hobart Town Courier, 30 Oct 1829. James Rowley, well known about the Wharfs as Admiral Rowley, was charged with stealing a quantity of sugar on board the Kilmaurs. He had been employed several days on board the vessel to assist in discharging her cargo, and without permission or authority had gone on board on Sunday, and was found with the sugar, which in every respect resembled a quantity on board the ship, from which there was no doubt he had purloined that found on him; but as no loss or identity could be proved, and Rowley stating one of the sailors gave it him, he was discharged. His worship warned the sailor against the Admiral's acquaintance. Hobart Town Courier, 3 Aug 1838.
