The Courier, Sat 17 Mar 1849. -------------------------------------------------- PORT of Hobart Town, - Arrival. October 5 - Royal Saxon, barque, 510 tons, Charlesworth, from Calcutta June 29th, with a general cargo. Passengers - and 10 male convicts. Colonial Times, 8 Oct 1850. THE "ROYAL SAXON." — This vessel anchored in our harbour on Saturday evening, from Calcutta and Madras. She has on board a very fine royal tiger, about 15 months old, and measuring about 4 feet 6 inches in length; also a young bear and several monkies. Hobarton Guardian, 9 Oct 1850. -------------------------------------------------- PORT OF HOBART TOWN ARRIVALS. August 12 - Barque Royal Saxon, 712 tons, Charlesworth from Calcutta 1st of June, with a general cargo, and 16 male prisoners. Colonial Times, 15 Aug 1851.

Wife; Kath' in India Also known as: Ryan, Scrummy Property: Port Arthur Insane Asylum Saltwater River Insane Asylum Cascades Hospital for the Insane Admission dates: 31 Mar 1849, 30 Mar 1849, 19 Apr 1877 Ship to colony: Royal Saxon Saltwater River Insane Asylum: 1852 - CON127/1/2 page 19. Disease; Mania. Received from New Norfolk. Lapsed into imbecility, quiet & amenable, but very slovenly & lies about the yard. Health Good. Full diet. 1/4 oz tobacco 1855 - 31 March. CON127/1/2 page 154. Is obliged to be kept separate as he is very dangerous, 1856 - 28 May. CON127/1/2 page 226. Picked up a stone and threw it at a child & struck her on the hip Port Arthur Insane Asylum: 1860 - 10 June. CON127/1/3 page 15. Continues to take fits of shacking & sometimes tears his clothes 1863 - 4 Jan. CON127/1/3 page 158. At times this man is observed to go round like a top and then fall to the ground. After a short time, he rises as if nothing happened. 1875 - 10 April. CON127/1/5 page 99. No change. becoming Imbecile. 1876 - January. CON127/1/6 page 36. Has been an inmate since 1949. Present age recorded as 66 years old. Is more like a man of 75. Can take a little exercise, threatens occasionally but does not strike. Health good and habits cleanly. 1877 - 30 January. Admitted to the Cascades Hospital for the Insane: DIED; 27 May 1883. at 6 am

Never tried by court martial before. E.I. C. service 7 years. Labourer, native of Limerick. W (wife) Kathn. In India.

Tasmanian Convict Conduct Record. https://stors.tas.gov.au/CON37-1-5$init=CON37-1-5p75 1466. John Ryan. Arrived on Royal Saxon, 16 March 1840.Tried at Subathoo Ct. Ml, 10 Aug 1848. 14 years. Transported for stabbing his wife with a bayonet with intent to kill and murder. Married. States this offence, Stabbing my wife with my bayonet, I was sober at the time, she was not killed. 7 years in the E.I. C. service. Roman catholic, can read and write. Labourer, 5 ft 6 ins. Age 32. Sent first to Impression Bay for a 21 month period of labour. Sent to hospital then to Lunatic Asylum. 3/3/52, 4/10/52, 2/5/1857.
