Mary Ryan was transported on the Margaret, departing 1st Sep 1838 and arriving 5th Jan 1839 with 170 passengers.
Built 1829 at Chepstow. 365 tons. Female prisoners were transported to New South Wales on the 'Margaret' in 1837, 1839 and 1840. The 'Margaret' was the last convict ship to transport female prisoners to New South Wales. Another voyage to Van Diemen's Land in 1843. The 1840 sailing also carried 17 free female passengers and one male. The registers of persons is not yet complete on this web site, so please note this if researching. (A work in progress.)

Convict Notes




The Convict Indentures state that Mary Ryan was 24 years old. Mary could read; religion Roman Catholic; status single. She was native of County Tipperary. She was a kitchen maid. Mary was convicted of stealing a watch at Cork on 19 March 1838 and sentenced to 10 years. She had one prior conviction for which she served two months. Physical attributes: Height 4 feet 10 inches; complexion ruddy; hair brown and eyes hazel. Transport number 29 and prisoner number 29-39.
