VDL Convict Record: John STRABERRY convicted at Carmarthen, Wales on 5 March 1835 for breaking into a warehouse. Gaol Report: "character and connections bad". Hulk Report: "orderly". 7yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Asia' arriving 21 Feb 1836. Single man. Stated his real name was Ebenezer JONES. Had been previously convicted under that name for stealing a coat and also for assault. Blacksmith's labourer; aged 21 years; 5'6 1/4"; fresh complexion; dk brown hair; dk Hazel eyes. Native place of birth: Bilston, England. To work in the Public Works by order of the Govt Secretary. 1836: at Richmond, VDL. 10 Feb 1840: Ticket of Leave granted. 1840: at Campbell Town, VDL. 31 May 1841: Application for permission to marry - John STRAWBERRY (per 'Asia) to Susannah COX (free). (ref. 52/1/2 pg 180). 27 July 1841: Marriage - John STRAWBERRY, aged 24yrs, bachelor, Ticket of Leave to Susannah COX aged 18yrs, free, spinster. At the Longford Parish Church, Launceston district according to the rite of the Church of England by Rev'd Albert Stackhouse. Witnesses - John Craig & Elizabeth Neal. (ref. 37/1/2 no. 1184). 9 Sept 1852: Departure from VDL - John STRAWBERRY, steerage passenger on the 'Tamar' from Launceston to Melbourne, Victoria. Free by servitude. Ship to Colony - Asia. (ref. 220/1/2 pg 132.) Date of return not located. CHILDREN: Emma STRAWBERRY b. 1 Jul 1843 at Avoca, Tasmania. Father John Strawberry, labourer. Mother Susan Strawberry formerly .... (ref. 33/1/26 no. 1202). Emma died 19 Nov 1859 aged 16yrs. Inflamation of the lungs. Father - John Strawberry of 'Bengeo', Deloraine, farmer. Ebenezer STRAWBERRY b. 1 Jan 1851 at Westbury, Tasmania.
