James Shilling was transported for stealing and was aged 17, according to his conviction record, and received his TOL in 1841 in the district of Cassilis. In 1865 he had a Ironmongery and Galvanised Iron business in Parramatta Street. He kept this business into the 1880's by which time he was also an Alderman. He married Mary Louisa ??? and had 2 daughters, Elizabeth Mary, Emma Susan and Edward Nelson. His wife Mary Louisa died on 5/9/1896 at 10 Edward Street, Summer Hill, aged 79 years and 11 months. 1/7/1902: James died in his 77th year (slight age difference to his conviction age).
