On arrival in Sydney NSW on 20 Sept 1820, John Simpson was described as age 19, 5' 5" height with hazel eyes and dark brown hair. In 1822, he wa in government employ in Bathurst. He received a Certificate of Freedom (28/366) on 24 April 1828, but it was recinded on 30 Jun 1830. He received a second Certificate of Freedom (39/821) on 11 June 1839. On this 1839 certificate, John Simpson is described as having light brown hair and bluish eyes, with eyebrows meeting, a scar on the center of his upper lip, scars on the heel of his left hand, and another on the back of his left thumb. On 25 October 1831 the application to marry was granted to John Simpson and Alice Wayfar (Alice Wafer, convict ship Maria arrived 17 Sept 1818 and widow of James Turley). The removed Alice's son Edward William Turley (age 6) from the Orphan's School and raised him along with their own three children: Elizabeth born 1832, John born 1834, and Eleanor "Ellen" born 1837. His wife Alice died in March 1848 and John Simpson died in 1855.
