William was the son of Thomas Simpson & Mary Snowdon. 'Thomas' became a soldier and was a private of the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot, serving in Canada. In 1829 the regiment arrived in Canada (Quebec, Ontario) where it remained until 1841 when it returned home to Britain. William was reported as missing from duty on 04 Jan 1836, "about 10 miles from Kingston, concealed, along with a civilian, in a hayloft, near the ferry crossing to the American shore." William pleaded not guilty to the charge. He was court martialled for desertion at Kingston Canada , 16th January 1836, found guilty of the charge of desertion and sentenced to 21 years transportation. William, was returned to England, and then transported to Australia for 21 years. Upon arriving in Sydney he was assigned to John Maurice at Sutton Forest. 3/3/1843: Married Susannah Janvin, at Berrima and they had 9 children. 1844: TOL Berrima 1846: TOL Passport, Yass 1/2/1849: CP William worked as a miner at Araluen. He lived the rest of his life at Araluen, and died in 1903 at the age of 92, and is buried in Majors Creek.
