Henry Smart (1806-1887) Married Sarah Blandford 12 Sep 1825 Stroud, St Lawrence, Gloucestershire. Convicted 29th April 1831 at the Gloucester Assizes for 14 years of sheep stealing (Three wether South-down sheep the property of Maurice Butler of Tetbury, Butcher) and condemned to death, commuted to transportation for life. His wife Sarah was also charged but found not guilty of sheep stealing Lent Assizes 1831 describe him as; Brown hair, light brown eyebrows, dark grey eyes, long face, large nose, scar left cheekbone, scar on the nose, scar on the side of the nose, sandy whiskers mole left side of the neck, small red mark above it. Elbow two small moles left side of the back large mole left side small of the back three scars from body on buttock large mark left thigh. Read not write. height 5’ 3 1/2”. Butcher. Departed 20th July 1831 abord the “Lord Lynedoch Luscombe” Arrived 18th November, 1831 at Van Diemen’s Land. Received a pardon in 18421866 Purchased 58 acres in the vicinity of Stinking Creek in the County of Wellington Tasmania. His daughter Fanny Smart married John Thomas Chandler in 1853 in Stroud Gloucestershire and emigrated to Australia as assisted immigrants in 1854, setting in Jamberoo NSW.
