The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

Henry Smith, alias Thatcher, has been committed to the Old Bridewell, Devizes, charged with having stolen Friday last, a sheet and a pair of cotton stockings from the dwelling-house of Richard Blamp? of Calne: and with having on the same day stolen a coat, the property of Charles Pyke, of Hillmarton. - Smith is a notoriously bad character, and is the same fellow who broke out of Marlborough Bridewell some time since. Devizes Gazette, 12 Dec 1822 The following prisoners were sentenced as follows: Henry Smith alias Henry Thatcher, for stealing a sheet and a pair of stockings, the property of ? at Calne, 7 years transportation.
