Convict Notes

No; 671 Aged; 25 years old. Farm Labourer The Courier (Hobart, Tas. : 1840 - 1859) Fri 12 May 1843 Page 2. LOCAL. EXECUTION.-Henry Smith, the man who, at the late Criminal Sittings, was convicted of the cold-blooded murder of Henry Childs, at the farm of Mr. Baynton, Sandy Bay, suffered the extreme penalty of the law yesterday morning at a few minutes past eight o'clock. A ciowd, more numerous than usual, had assembled opposite the jail, and on them the unhappy culprit, when he hid reached the top of the ladder, for some moments kept his eyes with an expression of vacant astonishment. The operations of the executioner, however, soon recalled him to the consciousness of his awful situation, when, submitting to the adjustment of the cap and rope, be, without littering a word, was hurled into that doom which, according to his own avowal, he courted, in the perpetration of the atrocious deed as a respite from the sufferings of a degraded nature. Henry Smith, per " Lady East," was transported for life fur horse-stealing, 24th March, 1824. He arrived in this colony April 1825, and in June, 1838, obtained a conditional pardon. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/2952737?searchTerm=Henry%20Childe
