Convict Notes

The Humble Memorial of Merchant Smith, Respectfully showeth That Memorialist was tried at Kilmell in the County of Tipperary in the year 1818 and received sentence of transportation for 14 years. That Memorialist arrived in this Colony in the month of December 1818, El. St. Vinct., Simpson master. That Memorialist from the period of his arrival in this colony to the present day has been in the immediate employ of Government, And has never during such period been charged with any crime or misdemeanour whatever. That Memorialist most submissively begs leave to impress upon the mind of your Excellency that he has at the present period a Wife and two small children. That Memorialist begs leave to state to your Excellency that for the past month through excessive illness, Memorialist has been unable to earn a shilling towards the support of himself, his wife and his children. Your Memorialist therefore humbly prays that yur Excellency in goodness and humanity towards Memorialist in consideration of his former good conduct and his present afflicted condition will be pleased to bestow on Memorialist such mark of Indulgence as your Excellency in wisdom and goodness may deem meet, And Memorialist in duty bound will ever pray. … The statement of Memorialist is in my opinion correct. John Joseph Therry. 7 Nov 1825. Note on back. Informed that the nature of the Indulgence solicited does not appear. 15 Jan 1827.

Police Incidents. Bridget Smith was next put to the bar, charged with a similar offence. (Possession of stolen items) The evidence brought forward in this case went to prove, that some months since, a robbery was committed in the house of G. Allen, Esquire, solicitor, and an inventory of the articles stolen was immediately forwarded to the Chief Constable; but some time elapsed e're any thing transpired which was likely to lead to a discovery of either the property or offenders. At length, from some information given, a warrant was issued to search the house of the prisoner for stolen property. During the search of the constables, the prisoner was observed in the act of secreting a shawl about her person, it was immediately secured by the constables and brought to the office. The prisoner in attempting to account for the possession of an article, (which from its value,) appeared to be the property of some person in better circumstances than herself; stated, that it had been given to her by a captain of a vessel, whose name she mentioned, and called on a man then in the office to corroborate, the truth of what she said, which he prudently declined doing, observing, that the prisoner's husband had offered him bribes to swear to whatever his wife should say. The prisoner was ordered to the third class in the Factory for a period of twelve months. Martin Smith, husband of the last prisoner, for attempting to induce a man to forswear himself, was sentenced to be returned to Government employ, being an unfit person to be allowed out of Barrack.
