N.B. There are 3 persons named "Mary Smith" on this voyage of the Mexborough 1841. Mary Smith was convicted at Co. Cavan, Ireland on 2 April 1841 for Larceny. 10 yr transportation sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the 'Mexborough' arriving Oct 1841. Ship surgeon's report: "well behaved". Widow, 3 children; aged 36 yrs; house servant. Native place of birth: Co. Cavan Ireland. Child: Thomas SMITH accompanied his mother on the voyage and was placed at the Queens Orphan School (this was usually a requirement by the Govt., so that the mother could carry out her assigned duties. Record for Thomas reveals he was admitted 4 Jan 1842, aged 5 yrs, but died there on 18 May 1842. Buried on 20 May at the New Town Cemetery. His name is recorded in the Memorial Garden. (ref. SWD7,28.) Child: Catherine SMITH (mother Mary Smith, Mexborough) was admitted on 4 Jan 1852, aged 8 yrs. Discharged 14 June 1845 to care of her mother. (ref. SWD7, 28) (Record for other daughter not located. Query if she also emigrated.) Assigned to work services. Several remarks of misconduct and sent to the wash tubs (hard labour at the Female Factory). 19 Aug 1845: Ticket of Leave granted.
