National Archives, Criminal Petitions. HO 17/75/47 Prisoner name: Peter Smith and William Smith. Prisoner's occupation: labourer. Court and date of trial: Cambridge Lent Assizes March 1836. Crime: Highway robbery of John Free, farmer of Castle Camps, Cambridgeshire. Initial sentence: Death commuted to transportation for life. Gaoler's report: Characters bad, Peter in prison before. Annotated: Nil. Petitioner(s): Thomas Smith and Rhoda Smith, the prisoners' parents, of Castle Camps; William Smith, convict, and 14 people including the prosecutor. Grounds for clemency: William was not involved; has several witnesses that he has an alibi; 2 other men have admitted they did it; victim John Free was over 82 years of age and now swears he could not positively identify William Smith and it was a cloudy night.
