1870 - INQUEST: An inquest was held at Victoria, Huon, on the 12 instant, upon the body of William Smith C.P. per Maitland and James Edwards per Augusta Jessie who were accidently drowned in the Huon River on the 28 Ultimo. A verdict returned accordingly




William SMITH/Richard ADAMS/Richard WOODWARD/William ABLETHORPE was convicted at Spalding, Lincoln, England on 5 Jan 1843 for stealing copper. Previous conviction. Life Sentence. Transported to Australia per the ship 'Maitland' arriving NSW and sent to Norfolk Island 1844. Single man; plasterer; aged 36 yrs; 5'3 1/2" height; light complexion; brown hair; dark brown eyes; Protestant; can read & write. Use of several alias names. Native place of birth: Easton, Northampton, England. (ref. inf. given on Convict record) Brothers: George & William Probation Period: 36 months. Served time at Norfolk Island (off the east coast of New South Wales) then transferred to Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) on 8 April 1847. 1848: at Sandy Bay, Hobart. 1852: at Huon (south of Hobart) 22 May 1854: Ticket of Leave granted. 29 Sept 1857: Conditional Pardon approved. 26 Sept 1865: at Franklin (south of Hobart) charged with stealing peas. 4 months imprisonment with hard labour. 12 Jan 1870: Inquest on a body found and believed to be William SMITH. Accidentally drowned.




Real Name Richard Woodward. 7th March 1839 was tried & acquited at Northampton asizes of the Murder of Elizabeth Longfoot at Easton Lincolnshire in 1838, along with John Archer & John Stancer. Arrested in Oakham Rutland 14 March 1839 for sheep stealing, also the cause of the Lincolnshire riot where a large mob decended upon the house of Woodward & Archer wich was burned to the ground. Arrested Spalding Lincolnshire for braking & entering with theft on the 14th Oct 1839 sentenced to 10yrs transportation mitigated to 18 months in Spalding house of correction. Arrested Spalding Lincolnshire again in 1843 for stealing copper boils, bell metal pans & brass saucepans sentenced to life transportation.
