Sherborne Mercury Dorset, England 3 Aug 1829: At the Winchester Assizes, on Thursday, John Stacey, the younger, was placed at the bar, charged with the wilful murder of Samuel Langtry, at Portsmouth, on the 1st of March last; and John Stacey, the elder, with feloniously receiving, harbouring, and maintaining him, well knowing that he had been guilty of murder. All the time the indictment was reading, the younger prisoner paid great attention; and when he was asked whether he was guilty or not, he in a very audible voice pleaded "Not Guilty."........................... Mr. Justice BLurrough then summed up, and the Jury almost immediately found him Guilty. He was then removed, and additional evidence given, which proved the crime imputed to the father, against whom the Jury brought in a verdict of Guilty. Both prisoners were then placed at the bar, and sentenced in the usual form: the son to be executed on Monday next, and the father to be transported for life. John Stacey (the elder) was listed as 53 years old on arrival. Native Place: Dorsetshire. John was literate, protestant, married with 6 children, 5'6" tall, ruddy complexion, dark brown to grey hair, grey eyes, spot on right of left eye, warts left arm. 25/6/1833: John Stacey (the elder) died at Sydney.
