An update on the information provided earlier this year. I have since found evidence of his death in 1892. He died in an asylum for the destitute in Liverpool. The entry states he died without property or relations, and that prior to his admission to the asylum, he was a labourer in Appin. From this I infer a family breakdown sometime after the birth of his last child, Maria, in 1871, when his wife and family moved to Robbinsville, near Wollongong. If this is the case, then the bankruptcy proceedings refer to his son, John, rather than to himself. I will research this further. Reference: NSW Hospital and Asylum records 1841-1913

Born Steyning, Sussex, England. Arrived Sydney Cove on 6 December 1829. Assigned to William Crowe of Appin. Granted ticket of leave on 8 April 1838 and Conditional Pardon on 2 March 1848. Married Sarah Burt (a 19 yo potato famine orphan who was brought to NSW on the Earl Grey in 1849) on 15 March 1851. Had 9 children between 1851 and 1871. Last apparent record is a bankruptcy notice dated 5 May 1890 for John Stanford, labourer, of Robbinsville, Bulli, possibly on his estate. Sarah, his wife, is shown as the head of the household in the 1891 census. No record of his death in any of the usual sources.
