JAMES STEDMAN was indicted for stealing, on the 15th of April , 4 lbs. of cheese, value 2 s. , the goods of Jane Jones , widow . JANE JONES. I keep a cheesemonger's shop in Duke-street, Smithfield . This small cheese laid on my window, which was shut - I was out when it was stolen. WILLIAM KINSEY . I am a labourer. On the 5th of April I was coming from Smithfield into Duke-street, and saw two boys at Jones's shop window, one of them laughed and turned to the shop, holding his apron up, as if to receive something - I turned my head and saw the prisoner come out of the shop with this Dutch cheese in his hand - I stopped him with it, and gave it to Jones's mother. Prisoner's Defence. He caught hold of me and said a cheese was gone. I said I did not take it. GUILTY . Aged 13. Transported for Seven Years . Euryalus hulk record. Reported in The Tasmanian, 15 March 1833: James Stedmans stood charged with stealing a pint pot and a loaf of bread, from the spirit store of Messrs. Wood and Menzies, on the Commercial Wharf.—Verdict, guilty. Sentenced to imprisonment and hard labour for 12 months.
