Family connections for James (Stevens) are: STEVENS James (Stevens) was born on 24 11 1802. He was tried for passing forged notes at St Mary Newington London, on 28 11 1820, at Surrey Assizes on 29 3 1821, sentenced to death commuted to Life & arrived in NSW as a convict on 24 11 1821 after a voyage of 5months on HMS HINDOSTAN. He was living in Parramatta in 1834. He was living at Parramatta when he married Martha (Capon now known as Raynor her second marriage) on 21 4 1834 at Parramatta with consent of the Governor. [Some details taken from this Website] Martha (Capon) was born on 10 10 1809 in Norfolk. She arrived in NSW with her mother on 8 9 1810 after a voyage of 7months on CANADA. She was baptised on 18 12 1825 age15 at St Johns CofE Parramatta & was recorded in 1825 with her mother. She became known as (Rayner). She lived with then married firstly, with permission, William (Cowell age36(Smees records) or 34(this Website)) on 29 10 1827 at St Johns CofE Parramatta & produced 2children. She was recorded in 1828 age22 at Parramatta with her family, she was Protestant. Details of Martha (Raynor)s family are given in entry for Henry (Baldwin ADMIRAL BARRINGTON 1791) on this Website. James (Stevens) & Martha (Raynor) produced 5children: 1.??? (Stevens) was born in 1835. 2-4.??? (Stevens) 5.??? (Stevens) was born in 1843. Morning Post Friday 6th April 1821 p. 3 BANK OF ENGLAND PROSECUTIONS. William Groves was indicted for uttering at Camberwell, on the 1st of January, a forged 1l. Bank of England note, knowing it to be forged, with intent to defraud the Governor and Company of the Bank of England... James Stevens was indicted for a similar offence, on the 28th of Nov. in the parish of St Mary, Newington. Guilty - death. The Prosecutor recommended him to mercy, and said, he should not have prosecuted him had he not taken seven forged notes in one day.

Tried and convicted at the Surrey Assizes on 29th March 1821 for uttering forged Bank notes, he was sentenced to death, but on the recomendation of the prosecution this was commuted to transportation for life. Left England on 29th July 1821. Ship:- the 'Hindostan' sailed with 152 male convicts on board, there were no reported deaths during the voyage. Arrived on 24th November 1821. Married widow Martha Cawell (nee Capon, daughter of free settler Israel Rayner and convict Martha Howlett, nee Capon, 'Canada' 1810) on 21st april 1834 at Parramatta, they had 5 children between 1835-1843. Citation details: Vol 02, Baptisms, 1826-1834; Marriages, 1826-1834; Burials, 1826-1834; p. 118, 1834, no. 470 James Stevens, Hindostan, aged 31,free, of the parish of Parramatta and Martha Cowell, free, aged 24 years of the parish of ditto were married in this church by banns with consent of H.E. the Governor this 21st day of April in the year 1834 by me Samuel Marsden. James Stevens signed the register and Martha Cowell made her X mark in the presence of Joseph Gray who signed the register and Ruth Gray who made her X mark
