Richard Stock, a young and handsome private in the 10th Hussars, was charged with maliciously cutting and destroying fifty yards of  cotton warp, the property of Mr. Switch, while under confinement in Richmond Penitentiarv, for breaking a jeweller’s  window, and attempting to steal a watch through the glass. The fact was proved against him by Mr. Switch and the overseer of the ward in which the prisoners were work. Stock himself had owned the deed without hesitation or shame, and gave the razor he had used to the overseer. He was laughing throughout the trial. When asked at the commencement if he were ready for his trial, replied, “Aye! ready for anything!” When asked at the conclusion of the evidence against him, had any witnesses call any defence to make ? he answered No! There is the Serjeant Major in that box . He can give me a character I think ? A d...d bad one too! ’ The Jury found him guilty, and the Recorder in passing sentence, said, that it appeared from  his entire behaviour, from the time that he committed the felony that brought him to prison, to the present moment, it was evident that he was anxious to be transported, and had been heard to say that if one offence did not suffice, would  commit more till the wished for sentence was recorded against him. Prisoner—“ So I did, and so I will. The Recorder continued  to state, that totally uninfluenced by his wishes, he had arrived at the same conclusion, that the ends of justice would would be best promoted by sending him abroad for seven years, and pronounced sentence accordingly. The young soldier flung up his cap in ecxtasy, exclaimed, “O , huzza! all right at last, go it my hearties; a wooden leg or a golden chain boys, &c.! On enquiring his character according to his reckless reference, it was found exactly to accord with his own pithy summary, viz. :—The regiment could get no good of him since he determined to give up soldiering, and that was the way to get rid of it! He was in the black-hole once a week, at least, for something or other; but he still came out just as bad as he went in! Saunder’s News-Letter, 27 April 1832.
