John Strange was convicted at Westminster 11/09/1822 for stealing a watch. Life sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land on the 'Commodore Hayes'. Bookbinder/sailor;Roman Catholic,read & write; single; brown hair; lt grey eyes; b. abt 1802 at Shoreditch, London. Several records of misconduct. Stationed at Port Arthur Penal settlement. Conditional Pardon 2064 24/05/1839. Further conviction in Colony: Hobart Court 06/10/1846 2yrs imprisonment. 1846 - Port Arthur 1848 - Impression Bay 10/10/1848 - Free Note on Conduct Record that John died at Port Arthur 25/10/1873, aged 75yrs. (unclear if at the Penal settlement or just the district). (ref. 557/1873-35 Tasman district)
