Family connections for William Talbot (Sutton) are: SUTTON William Talbot (Sutton) married Ann (???). He had 4children & was an officer of the Excise tried for making forged notes/receipts relating to spirituous liquors, on 20 6 1789, at Old Bailey on 8 7 1789, sentenced to death reprieved to Life, held probably at London or Middlesex Gaol Delivery & arrived in NSW as a convict on 26 6 1790 after a voyage of 5months on Fleet ship SCARBOROUGH; a voyage noted for extreme brutality of prisoners with a high death rate. It may be he, in September 1790, who escaped w/4others in a boat from Rose Hill. He was issued his Absolute Pardon on 12 11 1794. He was Free by Servitude by 1800. It may be he, in May 1804, who was appointed storekeeper at Castle Hill. He returned to England with some of his family om 15 5 1818 on DAVID SHAW-although his children are shown here to be comfortably settled in NSW. William Talbot (Sutton) & Ann (???) produced 3children: 1.Harriet (Sutton) was born about 1786. She arrived in NSW with her mother in 1800 on HMS PORPOISE. She married Adolarius William Henry (Evans/Humphrey) of Pittwater on 28 8 1812-recorded at St Davids CofE Hobart. ..Adolarius William Henry (Evans/Humphrey) was born about 1882. He arrived at Port Phillip (now Victoria) free on 4 10 1803 after a voyage of 7+months on OCEAN (supply ship with HMS CALCUTTA) (an expedition that settled in Tasmania); he probably camped at what is now Sorrento/Sullivans Bay. He went on HMS LADY NELSON to Risdon Derwent Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) on 13 12 1803, arriving on 15 2 1804. He was sent to Norfolk Island on 12 10 1839, arriving on 28 10 1839 & was recorded there in 1844/5. He was deemed invalid/infirn on 20 6 1844. He was tried at the Old Bailey 8 July 1789, for deception and fraud. Extract from his court record: " 512. WILLIAM SUTTON was indicted for that he, on the 20th day of June last, feloniously did falsly make, forge and counterfeit, and cause, and procure, to be falsly made, forged and counterfeited, and did willingly act and assist in the false-making, forging, and counterfeiting a certain receipt for money, with the name J. Smith thereto subscribed, purporting to be a receipt from J. Smith to Joshua Beardmore , for the sum of 18 s. of lawful money of Great Britain ; which said receipt for money is in the words and figures following, that is to say: "June "20, 1789. Received for three payments, " for licence by me, J. Smith;" with intention to defraud the king . A second count, with intention to defraud Josiah Beardmore. A third and fourth counts, for uttering the same with the like intentions.” In the course of the trial transcript, it appears he was formerly an officer of Excise, but at time of trial had been dismissed. During his defence, William Sutton stated he had a wife and four children. His original sentence was death. Old Bailey, 28 October 1789. The following prisoners, who had been capitally convicted at former sessions, were put to the bar, and received his majesty's pardon, on condition of being transported for their natural lives. viz, Edward Glynn , William Sutton , Francis Evans , James Green , William Coombes , John Dudley, Thomas Wilmot , John Price, William Poynton, John Wright , William Charlton alias Charington , Michal Conner, John Happy.




Capitally convicted, viz… William Sutton (late an Officer in the Excise, for feloniously forging a certain Receipt for 18s. being 3/ 8ths the yearly Duty for retailing Spirituous Liquors, with Intent to defraud Joshua Beardmore. Northampton Mercury, 11 July 1789.




William was able to bring his family with him. in 1794 Sydney he was given an Absolute Pardon. He and most of his family returned to England 15 May 1818 on the "David Shaw"
