James TANSLEY was convicted at Bedford, England on 8 March 1823 for burglary. Gaol Report: very bad & previous conviction. Life sentence. Transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship 'Asia' arriving 19 Jan 1824. Hulk Report: "orderly". Aged abt 20yrs; a sawyer by trade, last worked with a Mr. Johnson; single man. Native place - Bedford, England. Father: Josh Tansley, a carpenter (ref. Convict records) VDL: Assigned to work. 8 Feb 1828: Suspicion of stealing sheep. Committed for trial at Hobart and again sentenced to Life. 20 May 1830: Being at large, at Port Macquarie (west coast of the island). Transferred to Norfolk Island (off the east coast of NSW, Australia but administrated by VDL.) 15 Dec 1830: Departure from Hobart to Sydney per the ship "Elizabeth". ref. Convict, 33/1/1 pg 289.

He was caught trying to escape and was caught as a runway from Macquarie Harbour and transported to Norfolk Island in 1830
