In May 1834, at the age of 73, John applied to be married to the female convict Mary Ryan (herself a widow) but the application was denied. In 1837, at the ripe old age of 77, John married Mary who was only 27 years old. They had one child, a daughter Mary Ann (aka Annie) born 1838, before her mother Mary died at the young age of 31.




John, a cutler, was tried and convicted in York in 1787 for breaking into the warehouse of John Bardwell, and stealing, he was sentenced to 7 years transportation. Left Portsmouth on 22 March 1791. Ship:- the 'Matilda' sailed with 230 male convicts on board of which 25 died during the voyage. Arrived on 1st August 1791. Married convict Catherine Jackson ('Kitty' 1792) on 31st October 1796 at Parramatta, they had 1 child, Mary b1797. Church Records Year 1796 p. 5 no 18 John Tarlington of the parish of Parramatta and Catherine Jackson married by Banns this thirty first day of Oct in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety six by me Samuel Marsden. John and Catherine both made their X marks In the presence of Joseph Looker who signed the register and Ann Chapman who made her X mark Catherine died on 20th March 1811. John married convict Margaret Duggan () on 30th december 1811 at Parramatta, they had 2 children, William b1806 & John b1808. Church Records Year1812 p. 99 No 383 John Tarlington of the parish of St John Parramatta and Margaret Duggin of ditto were married in this church by banns this thirtieth day of December in the year one thousand eight hundred and eleven by me Samuel Marsden Both John and Margaret made their X marks in the register in the presence of William Batman who signed the register and Elizabeth Buffee who made her X mark Margaret died in February 1834 at Prospect, Greater Sydney, New South Wales age 50. John died on 25th November 1842 at Parramatta age 77.




John Tarlington was on the 'Matilda' 1791. John was transported for 'warehouse breaking and stealing sundry items. 1/10/1796: Married Catherine Jackson - they had 1 daughter, Mary Tarlington born 8/1/1800. Catherine Jackson died 1811. 30/12/1811: Married Margaret Duggan (Coromandel and Experiment 1803)at Parramatta. He was 45 years old and she was 27 - they had 1 son John born 1818 and died 12/12/1818. Margaret previously had a son, William Duggan 11/8/1806-1893 - his father was William Refrain (Perseus 1802). Son William became William Duggan Tarlington. Margaret died 1834. In 1828 John Tarlington had 180 acres, 120 cleared of which 70 acres were cultivated. he had 4 horses and 60 horned cattle. His 22 year old step-son William Duggan Tarlington had 40 horned cattle. 25/11/1842: John Tarlington died and was buried at St Johns Cemetery, Parramatta.
