On Thursday arrived from Calcutta, via Derwent, the ship Mary, Captain Ormon, with a various cargo. -Passengers from Calcutta, Captain Faithfull and Lieutenant Hamilton:-The Mary sailed from Calcutta the 23d of February, and left the Pilot the 1st of March. On the 5th of April, 1827, George was arrested at Houndsditch, London, for stealing a jacket valued at 14s and a waistcoat valued at 6s. George was twelve (12) years of age. George appeared at the Old Bailey Court before W Benett Esq, where he was found guilty of Stealing and sentenced to 7 years Transportation to Van Diemen’s Land (VDL) (Tasmania). George was held on the Convict Hulk Euryalus until the 8th of December, 1829, when he was transferred to the Convict Ship “Mary” for the voyage to VDL. The Mary sailed from London on 18th of December, 1829 and arrived at Hobart Town on 10th of April 1830 and voyage of 113 days. On the 15th of January, 1836, (Free by Servitude) George was granted his certificate of freedom. On the 30th of September, 1837, George was charged with stealing 2 ducks and 2 drakes at Launceston and was committed for trial. On the 28th of October, 1837, George was tried in the court at Launceston for stealing and was again sentenced to 7 years imprisonment and was later assigned to the Campbell Town Probation Station. On the 6th of October, 1844, at the conclusion of this 7 year sentence, George was again granted his certificate of freedom. George died on the 11th of June, 1887, at Hobart aged 72 years. The death register shows at the time of his death his profession was shop keeper and the cause of death as “old age”
