N.B. There are two Mary Ann Thompson’s on this sailing of “Sir Robert Seppings” 1852.

Mary Ann THOMPSON was convicted at Northallerton, York, England on 8 April 1851 for breaking into a building and stealing wearing apparel. Gaol Report: Not known before, but served 7 days for vagrancy. 7 yr transportation sentence. Sent to Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania) per the ship “Sir Robert Seppings”, arriving there 8 July 1852. Ship Surgeon’s Report: “very good”.

Single girl; aged 17 yrs; 4’11” height; housemaid; Protestant; can read.
Native place of birth: Liverpool, England.

Colony of VDL:
Assigned to work services.
1854: at Hobart and New Town districts.
6 July 1854: Delivered of a child, at the Hobart House of Correction.
5 Feb 1856: Ticket of Leave granted.

27 May 1856: Application for Permission to Marry - Mary Ann THOMPSON (Sir Robert Seppings) to Peter DRIVER (Aboukir).  Note: Although there are two Mary Ann Thompson’s on this ship, it is recorded on her Conduct Record that this is the man she married.

30 June 1856: Marriage - Mary Ann THOMPSON, aged 23 yrs, servant, Ticket of Leave status to Peter DRIVER, aged 25 yrs, labourer, Ticket of Leave status, at Green Ponds, Brighton district, Tasmania. (ref. 37/1/15 no. 26)

8 April 1858: Free Certificate issued.

Edward THOMPSON born 6 July 1854 at Hobart.  Son of female convict Mary Ann THOMPSON.  (ref. 33/1/5 no. 1279)

CHILD:
Peter DRIVER born 30 July1876. Father - Peter Driver. Mother - Mary Ann THOMPSON.  Died 4 Aug 1876 aged 5 days.  Child of engine driver. Born and died at Liverpool St. Hobart.  (ref. 35/1/8 no. 3515)

DEATH OF HUSBAND:
Peter DRIVER died 12 Aug 1898 at the Hobart General Hospital, natural causes. Statement given by wife Mary Ann DRIVER, “I am the wife of the late Peter DRIVER, of 27 Bathurst St. Hobart, he had been ailing for the last 3 weeks but he had not seen a doctor for some time”. He had been driving an engine at the Railway works for the last 26 yrs.  Inquest conclused natural causes of death.

DEATH:
Mary Ann DRIVER died 30 December 1901 at Hobart, aged 68 yrs, widow, Wesleyan religion. Last known address 306 Liverpool St. Hobart.
Buried at Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Hobart.
