The 'Ocean' was an English merchant ship and whaler built in 1794 at South Shields, England. In 1803 she accompanied the ship 'Calcutta' to Australia, acting as a transport supply ship. When the settlers abondoned Port Phillip, Melbourne, Victoria the ship transferred convicts, settlers and marines to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania). In 1815, 1817 & 1823 the 'Ocean' transported convicts to New South Wales.

William Thompson and Wm. Smith, for breaking into the dwelling-house of William Sanders, of Sturston, in the day time, no person being therein, and stealing about ?£ and some apparel. ... Bury and Norwich Post, 31 July 1822.




Yesterday sennight the following convicts were removed from Ipswich County Gaol, and put on board the York hulk, at Gosport: — Wm. Thompson and Wm. Smith, to be transported for life, and Joseph Cone and James Claxton, for 7 years. Bury and Norwich Post, 28 Aug 1822.
