Convict Notes

1837, 22 August: JOHN TOWNSEND was admitted to Kilmainham Gaol, Dublin, from Mayo (prisoner #775). He had been tried on 14 March 1837, convicted and sentenced to 7 years by Judge Perrin for having a base coin in his possession. He was described as 64 (born 1773 -- quite a difference to the age and year of birth given on the Convict Indents), 5’8” tall with grey eyes, grey hair and a dark complexion. 1837, 26 August: Discharged from Kilmainham to be “embarked on the convict ship Neptune” (see Ireland, Prison Registers, 1790-1924; Dublin, Kilmainham 1815-1910).

The Convict indentures state that John Townsend was 50 years old. He could neither read nor write; religion Protestant; status married with 2 sons and 1 daughter and a native of Warwickshire, England. He was a soldier and labourer. John was convicted of base coin and possession (no code for this, I selected the closest code) at Mayo on 14 March 1837 and sentenced to 7 years. He had no prior convictions. Physical attributes: Height 5 feet 8 inches; complexion dark brown; hair dark brown mixed with grey and eyes grey to blue. Transport number 196. Prisoner number 38-193. Received ticket of leave on 11 February 1842 (number 42/575) at Carcoar.
