The Summer Assizes for this County, came on at our County Hall, on Monday last. ... The Calendar contained the names of 34 Prisoners for trial, who were brought before the Court and disposed of as follows: … John Tree, 12, for a burglary in the dwelling-house Ann Steyney, at Brighton. .… —Guilty, Death Reprieved. ... Sussex Advertiser, 8 Aug 1831.




Hulk Records. HO-9-2_4 page 20/40. Euryalus. Two arrived from the York hulk. John Tree, age 12, Housebreaking, tried at Lewes, 30 July 1831, Life, NSW, Asia, 31 Jany 1833. The prison hulk, the Euryalus, an ex-frigate of the Trafalgar fleet, was moored at Chatham. Over the twenty years that this hulk serviced juveniles, about 2,500 boys of fourteen and under passed through. There were also considerable numbers of older boys both in the juvenile hulk and distributed among the other hulks. From the Euryalus, boys were transported both to New South Wales and to Van Diemen’s Land.




John Tree was 14 years old on arrival. Native Place: Brighton. Occupation: Errand boy ; tailor in Hulk. John was illiterate, protestant, single, 4'4¾" tall, fair complexion, light brown hair, brown eyes, tree inside lower left arm, blue streak and small scar inside lower right arm. Ancestry Convict Indents - Norfolk Island. 6/6/1840: Was tried at Bathurst for haveing fire arms in his possession - life. 8/10/1840: Arrived Norfolk Island. 1848: Arrived VDL per 'Governor Phillip'. 11/9/1849: TOL refused. 30/4/1850: TOL TOL was then revoked in 1850 (date unreadable) for being absent from Muster. 29/10/1850: TOL restored. 24/3/1852: CP refused - must hold a TOL for 2 years. 18/5/1852: Recommended for a CP. 3/5/1853: CP approved. 27/2/1860 Mount Alexander Mail, Victoria: CASTLEMAINE POLICE COURT. John Tree, for furious driving, was fined 20s., or seven days' imprisonment. 1903: VIC BDM - a death listed for John Tree, died East Melbourne - family unknown. No marriage or children found.
