Jane Elizabeth (or Elizabeth Jane) WALES was convicted at the CCC, London on 13 June 1836 for Larceny - stealing money from her lodgings, at Woolwich Rd., Greenwich. One previous offence. Jane had co-habited with a waterman named William Partridge who was also charged with being associated but only given a 1 yr prison sentence. Jane was given a Life sentence and transported to Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) per the ship Westmoreland, arriving 3 Dec 1836. Ship Surgeon's Report: "good". Aged 32 or 35yrs (Court states 35 but Convict record states 32); widow; dress & corset maker; 4'11"; fresh complexion; black hair; dk brown eyes. Native place of birth: Valencinnes (recorded on her Convict description) VDL: Assigned to work services in the Colony. Several records of misconduct. In 1838 sent to the Female House of Correction at Launceston for 3 months. 16 April 1839: Application for Permission to Marry: Elizabeth Jane WALES (Westmorland) to Ruben UNDERHAY (Coromandel). (Ref: 52/1/1) 1 July 1839: Marriage. Elizabeth Jane WALES, aged 30 yrs; spinster, convict - to Ruben UNDERHAY aged 38yrs; convict Ticket of Leave; bachelor. At the School House, Evandale by Clergy Edward Freeman, Church of England rites. (ref. 37/1/1 no. 208) 4 Nov 1845: Ticket of Leave granted. 9 April 1849: Disorderly conduct. T of L cancelled. 3mths hard labour. 20 Nov 1849: Application for Permission to Marry - Elizabeth Jane WALES (Westmorland) to Samuel HUNT (free). Approved. (ref. 52/1/3 pg 210). 20 Dec 1849: Marriage. Elizabeth Jane WALES, adult to Samuel HUNT, adult. Independent Chapel, Launceston, Minister Charles Price. (ref. 37/1/8 no. 610) 9 Dec 1851: Ticket of Leave restored. Conditional Pardon approved
